So what is classroom management?

Classroom management is a teacher's plan for maintaining positive behavior, motivation, and establishing guidelines/expectations for students. The purpose of classroom management is to create an effective learning environment in which lessons operate smoothly, disruptions are minimized, and student can flourish.

In my classroom there are several key components that make up my classroom management plan. It includes:
Rules
Rewards
Discipline
Classroom Jobs
Procedures

ClassDojo has developed digital tools that can help teachers, parents, and students improve classroom behavior, develop good learning habits, and support character development. It provides teachers with a convenient way to use a laptop or a smartphone to give students immediate props for good behavior or to flag them for misbehaving, and makes it a whole lot easier for teachers and parents to communicate about the kind of critical behavioral and character stuff that can get short shrift given today’s fascination with test scores.

Classroom Reward Coupons

Classroom reward coupons will be given to students who follow the rules, show appropriate behavior, show and act of service to another individual, for each set of 20 points a student receives in classroom dojo, etc.

Hallway Behavior Reward System

When the class receives a compliment in the hallway the class gets to add a part to Mr. Potato Head. Once Mr. Potato Head is completely put together the class earns a class prize. This helps motivate the class to follow the proper procedures when traveling down the hall.

Discipline
• Students receive a warning. • If the behavior continues they will pull a stick and the student will lose 5 minutes of recess time. During this 5 minutes of recess they will not be facing the wall, but will be silently walking in a designated area of the playground. I believe this time of recess is important and beneficial to the students learning and they should be active during this time despite their behavior. • If the behavior continues, a Behavior Reflection Sheet will be filled out by the student and taken home for parental signature and returned the following day. • If necessary, the teacher will contact parents and a conference will be held with the student, parent, and teacher.

Students following class rules will be able to choose something special out of the “treasure box” on Mega Monday for excellent behavior. (F.Y.I., the “treasure box” contains small toys and candy. If you would prefer that your child not receive candy or gum, please let me know.)

Hand Signals

Students will raise their hand and hold up one of the hand signals:
1. for exchanging a broken pencil with a sharpened one
2. if the student needs to get a tissue
3. if the student needs to go to the bathroom.
By using these hand signals distractions will be minimized through non-verbal communication.

Centers Rotations

Classroom centers will be pictured on a chart, the student will visit the centers listed in the column below their name in pairs. Each day the groups of students will rotate centers (I will move the name cards to the right, the last one will go back to the beginning). At the end of the week each student will have visited each center once.

Hallway Procedures

Each student will follow these four procedures when traveling down the hallway. They will be:
1. Silent
2. Still
3. Straight
4. Smiling
When we leave the classroom I will hold up 4 fingers thins will indicate that I want the students to give me a 4s Line. If their hallway behavior is slacking I will ask them "Are you in a 4S line?" and I will allow them to self correct.
